Lenovo Self-Help: How to Create a USB Recovery Drive

Your Lenovo PC comes preinstalled with the Windows Operating system, drivers and applications. If for some reason the Operating system gets corrupt, you can reinstall OS from the backup factory image stored on your hard drive. Lenovo recommends that you create a backup of this factory image on a USB Flash Drive. This will come-in handy if you need to replace or upgrade your hard drive which has the factory image.

To create the recovery drive, log into your PC and open control panel. In the Start Menu, type Control Panel and select it. You can also open Control Panel by pressing the Windows key with the letter X on your key board. This opens the Power User menu where you can select Control Panel. In the control panel window, Switch from Category view to Large or Small Icons. This will list all Control Panel Items. Click “Recovery” to open the Advanced Recovery Tools screen. Here, select “Create a recovery drive” option. You MAY see a “User Account Control” prompt about “Recovery Media Creator”. Click “Yes” to proceed. On the “Recovery Drive” window, make sure the option to copy the recovery partition is selected and click Next. You will be prompted to connect a USB Flash Drive.

The Drive you connect must be of size equal to or larger than the size displayed on the screen. Connect the drive, Select it on the screen and click Next. This process will involve deleting everything on the USB Flash Drive, so make sure there are no important files stored on the USB Flash Drive. If you have some personal files, make sure they are backed up. Click Create to create the recovery drive. The process may take a few minutes. Once it completes, click Finish. Disconnect the USB Drive, Label it and keep it safe. If you want to recover the operating system to factory defaults, boot from this “Recovery Drive” and follow the on-screen instructions to reinstall the operating system. Creating this Recovery media, will save you a lot of hassles. Thank you.
