How To - Use System Restore Points in Windows 10

A system restore point is a snapshot of how a machine is configured at a specific point in time. If a recently installed application or driver causes a machine to run poorly, restoring the system to a previously generated restore point can help it to function properly again. Using a restore point will remove applications, drivers, and updates that were installed after the selected restore point was made, but it will not affect any personal files on the system. If system protection is turned on, restore points are automatically generated whenever a new application, driver, or Windows update is installed. System restore points can also be created manually.

  1. To turn system protection on, open the start menu, type control panel, and select control panel from the results.
  2. In the control panel window, search for recovery and select the recovery category from the results.
  3. Click the Configure System Restore link to open the properties window for system restore.
  4. Click the Configure button and make sure that Turn on System protection is selected.
  5. Then click the OK button.
  6. To manually create a restore point, click the Create button in the system restore properties window, type a description for the restore point, and then click the Create button in the Create a Restore Point window.
  7. To restore the system from a restore point, click the Open System Restore link in the Recovery category of the control panel.
  8. Click the next button.
  9. Select a restore point from the list, and click the next button again.
  10. Click the Finish button to begin the restore process.
