System Update Suite Deployment Guide
The System Update Suite Deployment Guide (English) is intended for IT administrators, or those who are responsible for deploying and using the System Update Suite (Lenovo System Update, Update Retriever, Lenovo Thin Installer) on computers within their organizations. This guide provides the information required for installing and configuring these applications on one or many computers.
Lenovo System Update
- A tool to download updates for software, drivers, and BIOS from a Lenovo server
- System Update 5.08.03.59 (10 MB)
- System Update 5.08.03.59 Readme (16.3 KB)
What has changed:
--(Fix) - Fixed the issue that standard users cannot launch TVSU
Lenovo System Update downloads updates for software, drivers, and BIOS from a Lenovo server directly over the Internet without requiring specific user knowledge of where the package is located or if it is needed by the target system. System Update can determine which updates are needed and apply them. System Update can also be directed to a local repository managed by Update Retriever.
Note:
- Lenovo System Update is only supported on Microsoft Windows 11, 10. (Note: Windows 10 IoT is not supported.)
- Lenovo System Update is not supported on ARM-based PCs.
- Microsoft .NET Framework version 4.5.2 or above is required for System Update to work correctly.
- Before using System Update with Windows 7, click here to download and install the security update KB4474419 released by Microsoft to ensure that System Update updates can be installed successfully. For more information about this Microsoft Security Update, visit: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4472027/2019-sha-2-code-signing-support-requirement-for-windows-and-wsus.
- For versions of Lenovo System Update released in 2024 or later, logging is disabled by default. To learn how to enable, please see the Deployment Guide - Troubleshooting.
Administrator Tools
The Administrative (ADM) template file defines policy settings used by applications on the client computers. Policies are specific settings that govern the application behavior. Policy settings also define whether the user will be allowed to set specific settings through the application. Settings defined by an administrator on the server are defined as policies. Settings defined by a user on the client computer for an application are defined as preferences. As defined by Microsoft, policy settings take precedence over preferences.
Lenovo Thin Installer
- A smaller version of Lenovo System Update which does not require installation
- Thin Installer 1.04.02.00024 (7.3 MB)
- Thin Installer 1.04.02.00024 Readme (8.3 KB)
What has changed:
- Support HTML Readme files - Add "-ignorexmlsignature" parameter to commandline, to ignore signature check on XMLs - Include InstallDate item in WMI history - Verify package XML digital signatures - Remove XML schema check - Remove SHA-1 hash algorithm support - Fix several issues
Lenovo Thin Installer is a smaller version of Lenovo System Update which does not require installation - it can simply be copied to the target system. Thin Installer searches for the update packages from a repository that you create. The repository can be created on your local hard drive, a network share, a web server, or external media such as a CD, DVD, or USB hard drive. When Thin Installer finishes installing applicable packages, no registry keys relating to Thin Installer exist - thus the user only needs to delete the folder containing Thin Installer to remove all files associated with Thin Installer and the associated repository.
Note:
- Lenovo Thin Installer is ONLY supported on Microsoft Windows 11, 10.
- Lenovo Thin Installer is not supported on ARM-based PCs.
- Microsoft .NET Framework version 4.5.2 or above is required for Thin Installer to work correctly.
Lenovo Update Retriever
- A program that enables an administrator to search for and download updates from the Lenovo Support site
- Updateretriever_5.08.01.30 (7.9 MB)
- Updateretriever_5.08.01.30 Readme (10.7 KB)
What has changed:
--(New) 1. Support HTML readme files 2. Remove SHA-1 hash algorithm support
Update Retriever is a program that enables an administrator to search for and download updates from the Lenovo Support site to a repository folder on a local drive or network share. The repository folder provides the storage for update packages. System Update or Thin Installer can be configured to search for update packages from the repository folder on a network share instead of searching the Lenovo Support site. With Update Retriever, one can manually initiate the search for update packages, or schedule an automatic search for new update packages at a specified time interval. This allows greater control of the updates that are available to managed devices.
Note:
- Microsoft .NET Framework version 4.5.2 or above is required for Update Retriever to work correctly.
Lenovo Dock Manager
- A new solution to improve the large scale deployment of firmware updates for Lenovo docks
What has changed:
[Important updates] - Some updates to enhance security. - Allows to connect the dock for the first time without updating the firmware. - Change the default behavior of automatic software upgrade to not upgrade. - Optimized status message. [New functions or enhancements] - Add the firmware whitelist feature. [Problems fixed] - If no firmware package is available on the server, use the firmware package cached locally to obtain the dock's version for some old docks.
Lenovo Dock Manager is a new solution to improve the large scale deployment of firmware updates for Lenovo docks. This solution runs on your PCs and maintains a cache of the current firmware versions for supported Lenovo docks. When a dock is attached that has down-level firmware, it is automatically updated by Lenovo Dock Manager. It can automatically download firmware updates from Lenovo Support directly over the Internet or from a local repository on your network that is created and maintained using Update Retriever. The application can also record data from docks into WMI for administrators to query remotely for management purposes. See the Lenovo Dock Manager User Guide for more details.
