USB devices may not function when connected via Thunderbolt 3 docks - ThinkPad

Symptom

USB devices connected to Thunderbolt 3 docking stations may not function with ThinkPad models before and after login to Windows 10.

  • ThinkPad BIOS Password / Bitlocker PIN code cannot be entered from USB keyboard connected via Thunderbolt (TM) 3 docks.
  • USB devices connected via Thunderbolt 3 docks or Thunderbolt 3 dockins may be missing from Device Manager when booting to Windows 10.

Solution

Use the following steps to customize ThinkPad setup settings.

ThinkPad models released 2019 and later

  1. Reboot the system.
  2. Press the F1 key when the Lenovo logo is displayed to enter the ThinkPad setup.
  3. Go to the Security page and enter Virtualization. Set the Kernal DMA Protection to On.

  4. Press the F10 key to save and exit ThinkPad setup.

In case users do not want to use the Kernel DMA Protection feature, use the following information for ThinkPad models released 2017 and 2018.

  1. Reboot the system.
  2. Press the F1 key when the Lenovo logo is displayed to enter the ThinkPad setup.
  3. Go to the Config page and enter Thunderbolt (TM) 3.
  4. Set Security Level to User Authorization.
  5. Set Support in Pre Boot Environment to Pre-Boot ACL.
  6. Press the F10 key to save and exit ThinkPad setup.
