Create a USB Recovery Drive in Windows 10

When a PC has problems that prevent Windows from booting, a USB recovery drive can help to reset the system to its original factory condition. Creating a USB recovery drive will help you be prepared ahead of time if your PC ever develops these problems. When the recovery drive is created, everything already on the USB drive will be removed. Before creating the recovery drive, make sure to back up any personal files from the USB drive onto a different storage device.

  1. To begin creating the recovery drive, plug a USB drive with at least 16GB of space into your PC.
  2. Once the USB drive is connected, open the start menu, type control panel, and select control panel from the results.
  3. In the control panel window, search for recovery and select the recovery category from the results.
  4. Click the Create a USB recovery drive link.
  5. Make sure “Back up system files to the recovery drive” is checked and then click the Next button.
  6. Select the USB drive you want to use from the list of available drives and click the next button.
  7. Click the create button and wait for Windows to copy all of the required files to the USB drive.
  8. Once the process has completed, click the finish button.
