      Lenovo Bootable Diagnostics

      The Lenovo Diagnostics - Bootable USB can be booted by itself and tests hardware devices in Lenovo ThinkPad, ThinkCentre, ThinkStation, ThinkServer, and IdeaPad systems. It can be used on your Lenovo computer regardless of what operating system that your machine has.

      Bootable Diagnostics ISO image

      You will need to download an ISO image to create the bootable generator. To download this image,
      1. Click on the Lenovo Diagnostics - Bootable CD ISO file here
      2. When the file Download window opens, click Save
      3. Choose a folder to put it in and click Save
      4. To create a CD image, right-click on the image after you save it, and select Burn Disk Image


      Bootable Generator for Linux

      The Lenovo diagnostics – Bootable USB is a diagnostic tool that can be booted by itself and tests the memory and hard drives in Lenovo ThinkPad, ThinkCentre, ThinkStation and ThinkServer. The USB diagnostic took has to be created on a Linux system first, and only then can it be used on Lenovo computer regardless of what operating system the has once it is created. To download the Lenovo Linux Diagnostics – Bootable USB files, follow the instructions below:

      To download the installation file, click here. When prompted, select a drive and directory in which to save the downloaded files Please use a Linux system to prepare the bootable USB key. Existing files on the USB key will be overwritten.
      1. The following packages must be installed your System prior to Generate the Bootable application. All this packages are provided by your Linux provider. For example RHEL or Suse website
        1. Dialog Package
        2. Lsscsi Package
        3. Syslinux Package
      2. Installing and Running Linux Bootable at a Linux Computer (RHEL or Suse)
        download *.run binary
        Insert a USB key into your computer
        Run *.run file with root privileges and follow the instructions.
        Restart your computer and select the USB stick as the boot device.
        Lenovo Linux Diagnostics will be start automatically and you can use it to diagnose your hardware.
      3. Log on console as root:
        sudo su (Ubuntu)
        su- (Redhat/Suse)
      4. Plug the USB key on machine
        Execute bootable script:
        cd /tmp/bootable
        chmod 755 CreateBootable.sh
        ./CreateBootable.sh
      If no dependency is found, then the user is prompted to install them.

      Next step is to choose which device to create the bootable Linux from the menu. Please choose the USB key you plugged in to create bootable linux.

      A confirmation will be asked if you really like to format the USB key.
      *Notice, all data will be lost if the USB key is formatted.

      Then, the creation process will be started. Do not remove the USB key during this process. The system will finally show successful information and ask to press any key.

      Continue to press any key and then you can remove the USB key from the machine. Boot the system with the USB key to start diagnostics.

      Bootable Generator with User Interface

      1. Make sure you have downloaded the ISO image file.
      2. Your system may want to boot from the hard disk. To make sure that it boots from the removable media, click F12 to change the boot order
      3. To download the Lenovo-bootable-generator-gui-210.zip file, click here.
      4. Save the file in the same folder as the image file
      5. Go to the folder where you save the file and double-click the file to unzip
      6. Double-click again to launch the BootableGenerator.exe file
      7. Insert a USB key into your computer. Note that all data will be lost on this key when you create the bootable diagnostics
      8. When the LenovoBootable Generator window opens, click on the Type pull-down and select Linux.
      9. Select the USB key in the Available Removable Devices Window
      10. Click Generate
      11. The bootable USB will be created.


      Bootable USB with the Command Line Interface (CLI)

      If you do not want to use the user interface, you can use a command line interface to create a bootable USB on Windows, download the bootable diagnostics image from the Lenovo website.

      1. Make sure you have downloaded the ISO image file Click here for the directions
      2. To download the bootable-generator-10.exe file, click here
      3. Copy the bootable-generator-10.exe file and the image file (for example, linux-bootable-cd-4708081.iso) into one folder
      4. Plug a USB Key into your computer. Note that all data will be lost on this key when you create the bootable diagnostics.
      5. Your system may want to boot from the hard disk. To make sure that it boots from the remov able media, click F12 to change the boot order.
      6. Log in to Windows and launch command window with Administrator privilege
      7. Navigate to the folder where the you copied the two files run this command:
        bootable-generator-11.exe --create -l -u -f
        Where
        *<-1> is the new name of the USB key (limit of 11 characters)
        *<-u> is the drive letter assigned to the USB key
        *<-f> is the name of the image
        For example:
        If the USB key you has been assigned as Drive "I" by Windows, and the image you downloaded is "linux-bootable-cd-14.iso", and you name the USB key "bootable", the command would read as follows:

        bootable-generator-10.exe --create -l bootable -u i -f linux-bootable-cd-4708081.iso
      8. At the prompt, type "y" and press the "Enter" key to format the USB Key and start to create the bootable diagnostics tool
      Other Switches: There are two other switches accepted by this tool *--help Displays the help message for the tool *--List Lists all of the USB keys plugged in to the system
